There are two varieties that i know of, one is from Europe the other is from the America's . Obovatus has been introduced into the nursery trade in the last 20 years, and is gaining acceptance as a reliable deciduous tree. I think there are two distince varieties one from the central eastern United States and a fairly rare form from south central Texas around Kerrville. The European variety Coggygria comes in many leaf colors and has a very spectacular smoking seed display. The Texas tree has to be selected for smoking seed display some have it and others do not. This one of the exceptions, it is a good idea to buy it when it is smoking, if that is what you want. The Europeans like to severely prune this tree, polarding, to get a good display. Americans seem a little timid about this because it makes the tree, with out leaves, look tortured.
