The
mountain laurel is the most diverse shrub in Central Texas. Sophora Secundaflora’s
glossy leaves are evergreen and look good all year round. The bloom period is
from February to April and the flowers smell like grape. It is a very drought
tolerant shrub that can take any type of soil. It is fairly fast growing once
established. There was a myth that it was a slow growing plant but that is usually
only true in pots, which makes it harder to grow for nurseries. As you can tell
from the photos this plant grows well in urban and residential landscapes. Presently
we are seeing a caterpillar that use to not be here devastate the foliage all
times of the year. We saw some leaf damage in December which is very strange.
If you overwater they will get leggy The bugs are on this page eat the leaves
of sophora secudiflora.
