columbine aquilegia

A plant i associate with mountains and streams and woodlands. This plant is actually being grown more in the nursery industry, in more varieties. Columbines tend to interbreed quite easily which is what you see with canadensis hinckleyi, chrysantha, and longisima. These yellow forms are so similar i can't tell the difference. There are quiet a few asian varieties that are proving to be very adaptable. Since Austin Texas is a limestone area it is surprising most of the columbines i have tried do very well in the shade. Longisima has not performed that well for me but its still alive. I think some need full sun in the mountain states, because that's where u see them growing.
