arctostaphylos pajaroensisPacific Madrone
berkeley botanical Arbutus menziesii Pacific Madrone

May 26, 2003

Our Madrone is quite a special beautiful tree. They are very hard to propogate and grow in containers. These photos are of some Madrones that i see every week going out to the country. They are very robust and unscathed by deer.
The Madrone is a remnant plant that is going to be less successful as the historic temperatures climb. Man through agriculture (farming and grazing) have interrupted the trees escape north. If you see a Madrone growing near Dallas, they grow so much fuller and healthier. The trees i have seen also are growing in black land prarie, which negates the idea that Madrones grow in xeric soils. I think they grow in hot xeric soils with moisture available through deep roots. Madrones are very susceptible to fungus and bacteria thus hot wet damp is not the ideal growing condition. i hope to have some Madrones for sale at a later date

More later

These two photos are from Berkeley Botanical. I am just off the cuff thinking they are Arctostaphylos
This i believe is Arbutus Unedus or Canariensis

Arbutus xalapensis unedus, menziesii
