California
seems to have an unfair share of the great public gardens in the United States. Why
is that? I could speculate that there was a great deal of natural beauty from
the outset which needed preserving, and this preservation mindeset led to many
public gardens, because of over use, but this is true of just about everywhere.
Strybing is one of those gardens that maintains a world class plant collection
and continues to expand on that collection without negatively impacting the
prior collections. The plant collection is so extensive that i will have to
present better photos later. In fact the photos on this page do Strybing a great
disservice because it is much more grand than what you see here. My last visit
to Strybing they were having a plant sale and i was suprised at how helpful
and knowledgable everyone was. I had a friend who had just gone to South Africa
and we where discussing many of the plants he had just seen, and it was suprising
i could partially keep up becaue i had seen the same thing at Strybing. The
garden is located in a part of Golden Gate park. that is accessible by bus bike
walking, and car. It is amazing that it is free to visit and the hours are quite
good for visiting. How do they do it?
