Jamaica
is basically one giant paradise. As all Caribean islands there is the hot dry
side and the wet cool side. Captain Cook established the first botanical center
in Jamaica. It is unfortunate that this garden is in complete disrepair as are
most gardens. When we were in the Blue Mountains i was aghast that a professor
of The University of the West Indies had taken a group of orchid enthusiast
into the mountain to cut a rare endangered orchid out of habitat. He was suppose
to be protecting the orchids but instead he was ensuring the destruction by
one showing where the orchids were and then allowing the gentleman to take the
orchid, which was very illegal. The professor even admitted that the orchid
would never make it in Kingston where the gentleman said he was going to study
it. I suspect the plant was going to be exported to asia since the man was from
asia. Anyway, the Blue Mountains are really worth going to and hiking around.
it is some what treacherous hiking because of the steep terrain. I was amazed
when we ran into a stand of Eucalyptus trees that where so massive. You have
to be careful if you run across any marijuana fields to leave immediately because
you could really get into some trouble.
